I saw a fox at the bottom of the tall oak tree
his gaze was turned to the sky
"What's the matter, my friend?
Do you wish you could fly like them?
To soar with the crow and magpie?"
He said, "I've grown tired of this level-living.
What a thrill it could be to climb high
above the ground and to look all around
at the world as I let it pass by."
So me and the fox shed our skin
and jumped into the wind
Oh, it carried us up to a perch high above
the mountain, the stream and the sound
of a world below and all we had known,
oh those poor folk who lived on the ground
"Look at those creatures with their solemn, lonesome features.
How I wish they could dream as we do."
"But they're roots tangled deep
shall surely tie tight their feet."
"Unlike the fox and the beggar who grew."
So me and the fox shed our skin
and jumped into the wind
